Wisconsin gambling problems

January 16, 2010

helpGambling problems reached a high in Wisconsin last year, according to the statistics. In fact a record 14,604 calls were received by the Problem Gambling Helpline, operated by the Green Bay-based Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling.

The support group stated that this was an increase of 12.8 percent from the previous year – 2008, and also amounting to the second year in a row that the council reported a record number of calls.

Executive Director Rose Gruber stated that she does not thing the record will drop through 2010. She commented; “The economy is likely one factor affecting the increase in calls. Accessibility to gaming may be another factor, along with increased awareness of problem and compulsive gambling and the services that are available. We typically see a spike in calls this time of year. Credit card bills are arriving, there’s been the temptation of the college bowl games, and the Super Bowl is just ahead.”

Face-off between NBA Players after poker game

January 15, 2010

basketballA poker game on the 19th December, between NBA players Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton started off on a plane flight chartered by the NBA basketball team; Washington Wizards. This game then continued once they got back on the ground as the two players rose to very high stakes games with one of them not paying up to his debt.

The story unfolds with Gilbert Arenas facing Javaris Crittenton trying to intimidate him into paying the $25,000.00 gambling debt by threatening him with 3 guns. The Crittenton got out his own gun and even though no shots were fired, the incident grew on from there.

It also seems like the NBA team got to know about this face-of only from the New York Post Article. The NBA team is considering kicking out both reckless players as well as the current team manager Ernie Grunfeld. We will know more later on, as for now the 2 players have not even been suspended.

At the moment, Gilbert Arena is saying that he took the guns with him to the team’s locker room only because he has a new born baby at home and wanted to safeguard him.

Winners on a roll get a hard blow from VC Poker

January 15, 2010

vcpokerThe latest iPoker policy was issued stating that they will be penalising their partner sites for having too many winning online poker players. This new policy was a shock to the many poker players who were on a winning streak and now have to face a less profitable year ahead.

The VC Poker many regular cash game players on the Victor Chandler group received an email stating that they will be shut out from the cash games; “If you are not already aware, iPoker will be implementing a new policy in the New Year which will categorize players depending upon certain criteria. The new policy will impose penalties on card rooms that in essence have a high proportion of winning players in relation to losing players”.

“Regrettably, therefore, we are being forced to restrict a number of accounts in order to comply with the new policy and to avoid penalization by iPoker and it grieves me to inform you that we have no option for the time being other than to restrict the cash game stakes at which you play on Victor Chandler Poker. In the meantime, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that this action will cause but know that you can still play in tournaments and on any other of the Victor Chandler suite or products.”

This email was signed by Victor Chandler International and it went on to say that they do regret taking this immediate action and they do hope this current policy will change in the near future making it possible for the Victor Chandler Poker players to play cash games again.

January 6, 2010

pokerstarsmilliondollarchallengeMike Kosowski has hit the headlines as the retired NYPD officer who has managed to win $1 million through his participation at the FOX poker game show PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge.

Kosowski suffered an injury during 9/11 when he was a tower correspondent and was catapulted in the air resulting in him getting badly hurt and burnt. This time off work period was when he started out playing online poker. Now the same man has won over some of the world’s top pros such as Daniel Negreanu by playing head-to-head.

Mike was quoted saying; “It’s unbelievable. We’re still on an emotional high every day. Every day I wonder, ‘Am I living a dream? Playing against a pro is difficult. Because you know he knows the game inside and out. You can’t take as many risks as you would against some guy in Atlantic City.”

Poker Players in High-Stakes Golf Games

January 3, 2010

golfIn the November 2009 issue of the Golf Magazine, Josh Sens is taking a closer look in to the phenomenon that is high-stakes golf. Poker Players are usually well known for gambling for large amounts even outside of the poker felt and this is just what Sens is reporting in his article called “The Golf Sharks“.

The players mentioned in this article are Phil Hellmuth, Layne Flack, Erick Lindgren and Gavin Smith. These players are making wagers on the golf course that reach all the way up to $10.000 per hole. The game of choice is two-man best ball where Hellmuth and Flack are playing against Lindgren and Smith.

Sens also brings up a lot of the history behind betting, golf and poker and is showing the readers how closely connected the three really are. The Legend Doyle Brunson is mentioned as one of the players who played in the Professional Gamblers Invitational during the 1970’s.

In the article it is also brought to the readers attention that Daniel Negreanu is not participating in any of these high-stakes golf matches as he is still working on improving his golf game.
