New Jersey Online Poker Thriving on Innovation
February 13, 2014
New Jersey has seen an excellent start to its online poker industry, and now more than two months in, analysts are starting to make better long-term predictions on the future of the market, but only time will tell if there will be any decrease in the steady traffic the market has seen over the past month. Now that the initial launch is over, traffic leveled out and remained solid since around the beginning of the year. And the market share has been relatively unwavering, as well. About 41% of the traffic flocks to Party/Borgata, while about 34% heads to WSOP.com, and the All American Poker Network by 888 accommodates the remaining 23% of the market, according to PokerScout data.
At first launch, traffic levels were shockingly high, so there was no real prediction of where the market was going to top out at, but now there’s a better picture of what the market can support.
However, while traffic is secure, there are opportunities for changes in the long-term future. Some aggressive promotion tactics are going into play that may redistribute some of the traffic. As WSOP begins offering satellites and packages to this summer’s WSOP in Las Vegas, more players may be enticed to bet their chips there, while 888 has been offering 80% rackeback since the launch period, but this promo will end at the end of April, and perhaps take a lot of 888’s traffic with it. Furthermore, Ultimate Poker will introduce Two Street Hold ‘em, which is a two-betting-street hand of Texas, and the NO-verlay promotion, which will run through March 9th and refund all buy-ins on tournaments that do not go over their guaranteed prize pool (refunds made in U-Dollars). Essentially, this is quite ingenious because the NO-verlay promotion pretty much guarantees an overlay.
This type of innovative thinking is what is going to drive online poker in New Jersey and globally. The pioneering Rush Poker set forth by Full Tilt, which now there’s an app for, and many online poker brands have added this fast-paced poker game to their repertoire due to the high demand by players. PartyPoker also started thinking outside the box in the New Jersey market, teaming up with the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils sports teams, which seemed to sit well with sports-crazed Jersey poker players.
Poker sites are constantly coming up with new and inventive promotions and ways to play online poker and have been since the days of the digital scavenger hunt that Cake Poker initiated, making a list of poker achievements to check off the list, to PartyPoker’s World Domination in which players have to conquer worldly cities as they played. While innovative promotions don’t always work, once in a while, one comes along that redefines Internet poker, which is essential for the future of the industry.
According to PokerScout, Nevada leveled off after about four weeks, while New Jersey took nine. Furthermore, after Nevada leveled off, the online poker market saw a slow decline of around 20%. Whether or not this will be the case for New Jersey is yet to be known. The operators must now turn their attention towards retaining existing players instead of acquiring new players, where the innovative promotions will come into play.
PokerStars Road to 100 Billion: 85 Billionth Hand
August 13, 2012
The 85 billionth hand will soon be dealt at PokerStars online poker site, proving that the Internet poker phenomenon was hardly phased by Black Friday and the US DOJ. And to celebrate this amazing event, PokerStars will be paying out $1 million to cash players participating in online poker at PokerStars.
The 85 billionth hand is predicted to fall sometime in the next couple weeks at a PS cash table. The winner of the 85 billionth hand is guaranteed $10K. Other milestone hands between 84.7 billion and 85 billion will also be celebrated.
PokerStars celebrated its 80 billionth hand earlier this summer, and it’s only taken a few months for another five billion hands to fall. A Spanish player won more than $22K back in May when he won the 80 billionth hand, and his fellow opponents at the table also got $10K for just being dealt into the hand, and it wasn’t a high-stakes cash game either. It could literally happen anywhere at any time on the site.
This promotion is part of the Road to 100 Billion, as PokerStars celebrates every five billion hands dealt on the site. At the current rate, the 100 billionth hand is expected to fall sometime next year.
PartyPoker Adds Daily WSOP Main Event Packages
May 13, 2011
Despite what happened last month to the online poker community, online poker rooms are trying to move forward and have finally added World Series of Poker packages to their promotions. Beginning May 15th, PartyPoker will give away at least one Main Event package for the 2011 WSOP valued at $14K each day.
This year, the WSOP promotion at PartyPoker is similar to past years. Since PartyPoker wasn’t in the US market when Black Friday went down, they are hardly affected by the shake up in the US at all. Therefore, it’s business as usual for them, since they pulled out of the US online poker market years ago in 2006 when the UIGEA was passed.
There are a couple of ways to earn a PartyPoker WSOP package. Multi-table tournament satellites are one way and sit and gos are another. Buy into one of these satellites for as low as $2. Then move your way up through the qualifiers. The lower you start off, the lower your buy-in. So if you want to start higher up in the chain, just buy into a more expensive satellite.
If you want to get in on the direct and daily Main Event package tournaments, these will cost you $750. They run once a day through May 30th. Each day, the winner of this tournament will be guaranteed a Main Event seat, so in essence, if you only have to play in one, you could win a Main Event package for $750, which is a great deal.
The $14K PartyPoker WSOP package includes the $10K Main Event buy-in of course, in addition to an 8-night stay in a Las Vegas hotel, and $2K spending money for any other expenses you may incur.
New depositors will even earn a freeroll ticket good for a satellite that feeds into a WSOP qualifier, meaning you could go to the WSOP for free.
Weekly qualifiers are also running through June 19th. The 2011 WSOP Main Event will begin on July 7th and run through July 19th when the final nine will be determined, and then play will resume in November, as usual.
Carbon Poker Pays Out Bad Beat Jackpot
November 18, 2010
After a recent bad beat jackpot payout at UB.com, another one hit at Carbon Poker, this time in the low-stakes. This dual hit is the first time in the history of Internet poker that two bad beat jackpots have been hit in the same week on two separate poker sites.
The UB.com bad beat jackpot paid out more than half a million dollars and the second at Carbon Poker paid out about $156,000—not bad for a cash game with a max buy-in of less than $100.
“dk2112” open limped into the hand that ended up in a bad beat with pocket 7s. The table was $0.05/$1 NLH. The flop fell 8/7/2. Before he had a turn to act, player “Stingray57” led out with a small bet and was then raised by another player “BlackOutBob.” Player dk2112 called, and to his delight, fourth street was another 7. He then bet $5. When a second 8 fell on the river, he went all in with his last $6.50, expecting to win the $55 pot hands down. However, to his surprise, he didn’t win the pot. Instead, BlackOutBob holding pocket 8s (giving him quad 8s) won.
But losing the hand qualified dk2112 for the Carbon Poker Bad Beat Jackpot, which paid him a lot more than $55. Instead, he earned the $156,000+ jackpot prize. BlackOutBob was also rewarded with a nice $78,000+ payout, and all the other players in the hand split the $13,000 remaining prize money. The Carbon Poker bad beat jackpot is already back up to $100,000. Make no mistake—it is possible for it to hit again in the near future!
