September 6, 2011

Macau, one of the two special administrative regions of China (along with Hong Kong), relies heavily on gambling and tourism to support their economy. In fact, the gaming industry in Macau is growing at such an extraordinary rate, that it is quickly becoming one of the biggest gambling markets in the world. According to MGM China, Macau is “the strongest gaming market in the world.”

This former Portuguese colony saw its gross domestic product rise by 26.4% in the past year alone, according to the Casino Times. In addition, the latest survey has indicated that gaming revenue rose 44% just in the first half of 2011. This means that the gambling profits for Macau have quadrupled those of Las Vegas.

Galaxy Macau is the newest force to come along lately and has created 8,000 jobs for people in the area. Galaxy Macau consists of 2,200 rooms and houses a 39,000-square-meter gaming floor, and a rooftop beach!

As a result, just as Vegas grew fairly quickly in its glory days, new casino properties are popping up all over Macau, which lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta and borders the Guangdong province to the north. To the east and south, Macau faces the South China Sea.

With the plight of professional online poker players still looming heavy over head, there may be a migration trend for these pros from the US to Macau in the future. And according to the World FactBook, Macau has the highest life expectancy in the world. Who says you can’t play poker forever?!
